There are many Christians who are attempting to live their lives by the letter of the Law, or the guidelines set forth in the Old Testament. Unfortunately, they are binding themselves to a system that has been overhauled by Jesus Christ. The Law was instituted for the purpose of showing mankind his need for a Savior. It was also given to be a type
see more of “tutor” for spiritually dead people who needed rules and guidelines to show them how to live since they did not have the Holy Spirit living inside of them. In the Old Testament, God had specific laws in place for the Israelites to give them a blueprint of how to live and to “train” them as best He could, considering they were not born again. However, the problem was not with the Law but the fact that man couldn’t keep it! It was ultimately designed to point the way to Jesus Christ and show people that they cannot ever achieve righteousness through self-effort.

When we misunderstand the purpose of the Law, we will inevitably relate to it improperly as new covenant people. Even still, it is important that we gain a thorough understanding of the difference between the old and new covenants so that we can walk in the liberty of God’s grace today. The Law of Moses was a set of rules and regulations, headed up by the Ten Commandments, designed to reveal to people the reality of their sin nature. This was evident by the fact that the Israelites in the Old Testament could never keep the Law in its entirety. They were constantly breaking God’s commands, so they had to offer yearly sacrifices to atone for their sins. This system of sacrifices was ongoing, and without a blood sacrifice of an animal during that time, God would have destroyed the people completely.

One thing the Law was responsible for was arousing the sin nature within a person. Romans 7:5 says, “For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.” Contrary to what many people think, the Law doesn’t curb sin; it arouses it. Rules, while having the appearance of keeping sin at bay in our lives, really don’t restrain it from running rampant. The Apostle Paul said that his sin nature seized the opportunity afforded by the commandments and actually produced “every kind of covetous desire” (Romans 7:8, NIV). He also said that apart from the law, sin is dead! This is because until a law is put in place telling you not to do something, it is not wrong. However, when a law is present forbidding something, it becomes “against the law” to do that particular thing. Sin goes against the law in every sense of the word, so when we become law-conscious, sin begins to rise up in our lives.

Why did God want to liberate us from the Law? That question can be answered by looking at it in the context of relationships. Would you want someone to love you and be in a relationship with you because he or she was told that he or she had to, or because they chose to love you of their own free will? By delivering us from the Law, God invites us to live a life freely chosen, not one out of duty or obligation. The Law cannot give you this type of freedom, but a Spirit-led relationship with Christ can.

Hebrews 8:7-13 paints a picture of the new covenant God has cut with us through Jesus Christ. This covenant eradicates the old covenant, which includes the Law:

For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers…For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: And they shall not teach every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the lease to the greatest. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

Abolition of the Law is good news for the Christian. Under the new covenant, God promises to personally write His laws on our hearts and put them in our minds. We are now the beneficiaries of God’s love and mercy toward us, and He promises to completely forget our iniquities. Why would you want to return to the old covenant when He has provided a much better one for us? Out with the old and in with the new! >Creflo Creflo Dollar
